A bus carrying 35 elementary school children on an outing has caught fire on a New York City bridge, but the children and their escorts have been rescued.
The bus was transporting students from Brooklyn's P.S. 5 on Friday morning when it burst into flames near the Staten Island-bound toll plaza of the double-decked Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Representatives from three states made their plea in the nation's capital to highlight the benefits of an improved North/South Appalachian Highway.

A citizens advisory group can't recommend a possible Tacoma Narrows Bridge toll increase until it gets a ruling on how soon it must pay back $5.2 million it spent to set up the toll-collection system.
State Department of Transportation officials said at a meeting of the advisory panel Thursday night that the money was spent on operations and must be paid back with tolls.
